Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti (or the KGB) was the Committee for State Security for the Soviet Union created on March 13th, 1954 and ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union. It followed other secret police organizations such as the NKVD, MBG, Cheka, and OGPU. The KGB were responsible for several things including foreign operations, patrolling the borders of the Soviet Union, insuring the political loyalty of the armed forces, and protecting the safety of the Soviet leadership. The KGB emphasized strong control over the Soviet Union’s citizens.
